Synopsis

Cardinal Lavigerie accused the Ottoman authorities of being complicit in the slave trade in a letter published in “L’Indépendance Belge”. Several newspapers mention that also non-Muslims act as slave traders. The polemic between Carathéodory and the cardinal results in a negative attitude towards the cardinal in the press as well as in the public opinion.
