Réponse au Cardinal Lavigerie - Une annexe
The anti-slavery speech of cardinal Lavigerie with the absurd accusations against Islam and the Ottoman Empire is published. Carathéodory also mentions a letter published in the London-based “Diplomacy Fly-sheets” written by professor Leitner positively appreciating the speech of cardinal Lavigerie. Carathéodory sees in this an opportunity to stimulate Ottoman patriotism by letting the Sultan act in his role as caliph of all Muslims. The diplomat translated Leitner’s letter and wrote a protest letter against it and asked “L’Indépendance Belge” to publish both. Unfortunately they only published his letter not Leitner’s one. Finally Carathéodory reports that the crusade became a fiasco.
