Letters from the Imperial Legation in Brussels (1849–1914)
Synopsis
Carathéodory reports that Brialmont is honored by the Sultan's request and is willing to act as an advisor for the planned renewals to Istanbul's fortifications. It is noted that he needs to obtain prior permission of the King however. Brialmont would be able to travel to Istanbul in May or September. Carathéodory demands to be notified by the Sultan on when he should start lobbying with Belgian King.

Confidentiel ! Je prie Votre Excellence de vouloir bien communiquer le télégramme suivant à S.E. le Sérasker Pacha : « J’ai rempli Iradé Impérial transmis par V.E. – Le général Briamont s’est montré très honoré de ma communication. Il m’a dit qu’il se met à la disposition du gouvernement Impérial. Il est prêt à donner même d’ici au point de vue technique ses avis sur des avant-projets faits et des plans qui lui seraient soumis et qu’il
discuterait avec un officier compétent qui viendrait ici. Il considère cependant examen sur place indispensable ; il viendrait donc très volontiers en mai ou bien en septembre à Constantinople, mais pour ce voyage qui serait toutefois effectué sans aucun caractère officiel, il doit absolument avoir l’autorisation du Roi. Il ne met aucune autre condition que simple remboursement de ses frais de voyage et d’hôtel. Votre Excellence voudra
bien me faire connaître ce que Sa Majesté Imperial daignera décéder quant à la démarche à faire auprès du Roi.
