Synopsis

armée belge

Seïfeddin Bey reports that the members of the Belgian House of Representatives debated about and voted for the term of military service. A large majority (of Catholics and moderate liberals) supported the government’s proposal, which meant that the term of military service remained fifteen months. Leading military men considered this term as a necessary minimum. The radical liberals wanted to reduce compulsory military service to one year, whereas the socialists wanted to reduce compulsory military service to six months for the infantry and to one year for the cavalry. The government considered a reduced term of military service to be dangerous for the soldiers’ education. Moreover, it would lead to a decrease in the number of effectives.
