Synopsis

Elections communales belges.

Essad Bey informs Moustafa Assim Bey about the communal elections in Belgium. These were seen as the prelude to the legislative elections of the next year. The socialists and the liberals entered into a coalition for the purpose of supporting pure universal suffrage. Essad Bey even speaks of cartels, for in some municipalities, the liberals and socialists had a joint list. Their efforts led to success, and to demonstrations that demanded the dissolution of the Belgian House of Representatives. The situation became precarious for the Catholics who were in power for 27 years, but did not have a large majority in the House of Representatives. Essad Bey is certain that the legislative elections of the year after would turn out in favour of the liberal-socialist coalition.
