Chambre belge
Abdulhak Hamid Bey reports about an incident that occurred in the Belgian House of Representatives. Wauwermans, a Catholic MP representing Brussels, remarked that those who abandon the religious life usually do so because they want to abandon the vow of chastity. This caused a lot of tumult amongst the socialists. Socialist MP Hubin even spat in the face of Wauwermans. The opposition – socialists and liberals together – issued a vote of no-confidence in the government. The Catholic MPs, who had only a small majority but were outnumbered that day, left the room before the voting started. Abdulhak Hamid Bey adds that this vote of no-confidence did not mean that the government would resign.
