Synopsis

75eme Anniversaire de l'Indépendance Nationale

Munir Pacha reports about the celebrations on 21-07-1905 in honour of the 75th anniversary of Belgium’s independence. The celebrations started with a splendid Te Deum, attended by the diplomatic corps in uniform. King Leopold II invited the papal nuncio, Vico, to have an audience with him. The nuncio conveyed the felicitations of the diplomatic corps. The King seemed touched by this, and charged Vico with conveying his thanks to the other diplomats. In the afternoon, there was a big patriotic celebration in the square at the decorated Palace of Justice. Munir enumerates the people of importance who were present. The diplomatic corps, for example, - still in uniform - also attended the celebration, which was a mix of speeches and a parade, paying tribute to the King, the dynasty and the country. He describes the festivities as a grandiose spectacle.
