Synopsis

"Te Deum" du 21 juillet.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi informs Saïd Pacha about the Te Deum in honour of the anniversary of the inauguration of the Belgian dynasty, on July 21st. He briefly mentions that King Leopold II and Queen Marie-Henriette were present, as well as all the nation’s corpses, such as the complete diplomatic corps (in uniform). The Count of Flanders, Prince Philippe of Belgium (brother of Leopold II), did not attend the ceremony, because he was in mourning over the death of his son, Baudouin. Carathéodory saw the opportunity to convey the wishes of the Sublime Porte for Belgium’s good fortune and prosperity to the Belgian Prime Minister, Auguste Beernaert, and to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Prince de Chimay.
