Synopsis

Elections législatives belges.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi informs Saïd Pacha about the Belgian legislative elections – to renew half of the seats in both Chambers of the Belgian parliament – that took place on June 12th. He foresaw a liberal victory in Brussels, but that would not seriously endanger the Catholic majority. The Catholic Beernaert government still had a more than sufficient majority. Carathéodory predicts that this government would stay in power for at least four more years, as the next legislative elections within two years would mostly concern liberal seats. Carathéodory seems glad with the results of the elections. He explains that there was still discord within the Liberal Party. To conclude, he expresses his belief that the government would continue to be moderate.
