Synopsis

Débats parlementaires sur les canons Krupp et l'armement des forts de la Meuse. - Une annexe.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports on the reaction of the industries of Liège to the rumours about the Belgian government’s decision to install Krupp cannons and armament at the new Meuse fortresses. In their opinion, the government had to allow for a competitive exam of Belgian and foreign industries. This led to long and serious discussion in the Belgian House of Representatives. The Beernaert government defended its freedom of decisions. This leads to wonder why the government did not accept the proposal for a competitive exam. Carathéodory heard that in Seraing the artillery (produced by John Cockerill) was cheaper and of a comparable (or even a better) quality than the artillery in Essen (produced by Krupp). By choosing Seraing over Essen, the national industries could have been sponsored. The motives for the government’s decision were thus unclear. (The enclosed summary of the parliamentary debates is not photographed.)
