Synopsis

Elections françaises

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi informs Aarifi Pacha about the preliminary results of the elections in France, that were not really a big surprise to him. It was to be expected that the monarchist parties would not become a majority. It was clear, however, that the republican majority was dangerously affected by the divisions among them and the preponderance of the radical wing. This led to wonder if the formation of a decent government was even possible in France. Perhaps France would enter a period of revolutionary convulsions, that would eventually affect Europe. Yet, Carathéodory did not completely concur in these pessimistic views. The republican regime received a blow, but the division amongst the monarchists and the absence of adventurous and resolute monarchist leaders were advantageous for the republicans. Carathéodory hopes that the moderate republicans would turn universal suffrage to their advantage, which means that they had to avoid making the multiple mistakes that cost them their majority. They could form a compact core, resisting to attacks from the right, resisting to getting carried away by the radical left, and consequently preserving France from incalculable calamities.
