Synopsis

Arrivée du Nonce à Bruxelles.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports that, after having presented his credentials to King Leopold II, Ferrata, the papal nuncio in Belgium (who used to be archbishop of Thessaloniki), gave receptions on June 5th and 6th. Carathéodory reminds Assim Pacha that the previous Catholic Malou government had decided to re-establish Belgium’s diplomatic relations with the Vatican, that were broken off by the liberal Frère-Orban government. After the turmoil and incidents that followed the decisions of the Malou government, the new, more moderate Catholic government was afraid of how the liberal population of Brussels would react to the official audience of the papal nuncio. Even a year after the appointment of the new government, precautions were considered to be useful in this case. Carathéodory notes that, luckily, everything ran smoothly. The papal nuncio was able to go from his nunciature to the palace and back again without having received any insults. Carathéodory concludes that the old diplomatic relations between Belgium and the Vatican were now re-established.
