Synopsis

Elections législatives de 11 Juin

Contrary to all expectations concerning the Belgian elections, the liberal party won the elections of June 11th, with ten extra seats in the House of Representatives and six extra seats in the Senate. The Catholic Malou government thus resigned. Conform to the custom rules, King Leopold II invited Frère-Orban, the liberal leader, to the palace, and ordered him to form the new government. Etienne Carathéodory Effendi notes that he saw fit to convey the regrets of the Ottoman legation to Jules Malou and Count d’Aspremont-Lynden, now that they saw their cordial relations come to an end. In his report, he reassures Safvet Pacha that the liberals would be honour bound to maintain the same relations with the Ottoman legation.
