Synopsis

Fête nationale du 21 juillet.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports about the anniversary of the inauguration of King Leopold I, that was celebrated with great lustre on July 21st. Contrary to the decision of the previous (liberal) government to dispose of the official character of the celebrations, the Catholic Malou government returned to the traditional luxury of the religious service and to the old etiquette. All high officials had to show up in uniform. As usual, the Te Deum was attended by King Leopold II, Queen Marie-Henriette, the Count and Countess of Flanders – Prince Philippe of Belgium (brother of Leopold II) and his wife Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen –, their civil and military households, and the complete diplomatic corps.
