Synopsis

Incendie du Palais de la Nation. - Une annexe.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi writes about the fire that destroyed the Palace of the Nation (the seat of the Belgian parliament) in Brussels. Most art objects were saved, but the parliamentary library was completely ravaged. The original text of the Belgian Constitution of 1830 was lost. The material damage was large, and would be covered by the National Treasury. The Senate’s room could be saved, so that was where the members of the House of Representatives resumed their debates. Patriotic terms were used during the debates concerning the fire. (The enclosed reproduction of these debates is not photographed.) The Ministry of Public Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were saved. Seven firemen and workmen were seriously injured. The two people who died in the fire, received a solemn funeral, paid for by the city of Brussels and the state.
