Synopsis

Manoeuvres de l'armée belge

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports that the Belgian army had been on manoeuvres, led by General Van der Smissen, for about two weeks. The simulation exercise of this year was to defend Belgium against an army coming from Germany, passing through the breach between the Sambre and the Meuse rivers. The culmination of the simulation was a battle near Philippeville. The manoeuvres ended with a big gala dinner at court. King Leopold II invited to his table the many Belgian and foreign generals and officers who had actively contributed to the manoeuvres.
