Synopsis

Te Deum à Sainte Gudule.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports about the Te Deum in honour of the anniversary of the inauguration of King Leopold I on July 21st. He mentions the people present and notes where they were seated in the cathedral. Most importantly, King Leopold II, Queen Marie-Henriette, the Count and Countess of Flanders – Prince Philippe of Belgium (brother of Leopold II) and his wife Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen – were present, as well as their civil and military households. The diplomatic corps also attended the ceremony, in uniform. Also present were the government, the superior officers of Brussels and the civic guard, and the mayor of Brussels. The foreign ministers received military honours. Carathéodory remarks that the Members of Parliament, the Speakers of both Chambers, as well as the judicial and administrative officials did not attend the Te Deum as a body. Yet, many were there (in civilian clothes).
