Synopsis

Elections législatives.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reminds Saïd Pacha that in the Belgian parliament half of the seats were renewed by elections that were held every two years. He reports about the elections of June 13th, that he considered to be important, as a victory for the Catholics would mean that the achievements of the liberal government concerning the secularization of primary education would be nullified. Both parties – the Catholics and the liberals – were almost equally large, which led to a fierce battle, with accusations and insults (and even violence in Brussels). The elections turned out to be a considerable success for the liberals. However, this victory also resulted in an enlargement of the radical liberal faction in the parliament. Carathéodory fears that this might eventually lead either to the radicalisation of measurements taken by the government, or to the fall of the moderate liberal government, if the radicals voted with the right.
