Synopsis

Changements diplomatiques belges.

After the decease of Baron Nothomb, a new Belgian minister in Berlin had to be appointed. Nothomb had been minister in Berlin for 36 consecutive years. The Belgian government put forward the dean of the diplomatic corps, Count Van der Straten-Ponthoz (the ambassador in The Hague) as the new minister plenipotentiary in Berlin. King Leopold II accepted this suggestion. Etienne Carathéodory Effendi explains why Count Van der Straten-Ponthoz was a good choice. Baron Auguste d’Anethan would replace Count Van der Straten-Ponthoz in The Hague. D’Anethan was the Belgian minister at the Vatican, until the rupture of Belgium’s diplomatic relations with the Vatican.
