Démission du Président de la Chambre des Représentants. - une annexe
Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports about an incident in the Belgian House of Representatives. A member of the opposition, the conservative Charles Woeste, accused the liberal Prime Minister, Walthère Frère-Orban, but eventually recalled his accusations. Nonetheless, Frère-Orban, supported by the liberal majority, demanded to call Woeste to order. This led to a dispute between Frère-Orban and the Speaker, Jules Guillery. The latter, who was also a liberal, resigned as the Speaker. Carathéodory notes the questions that were raised by Guillery’s decision, trying to understand his point of view. He sees this incident as the proof of a scission within the liberal majority, which could have consequences for the government’s stability after the next elections and for Belgium’s politics of the Interior. (The enclosed summary of the incident is not photographed.)
