Synopsis

Incident du Te-Deum - Une annexe.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports about an incident concerning the name day of King Leopold II. When the Speaker of the Belgian House of Representatives announced the usual Te Deum in honour of the name day of the King, a liberal MP, Count Goblet d’Alviella, protested against the participation of the House of Representatives to a catholic ceremony. He considered it to be unconstitutional, as the Belgian constitution did not recognize any religion as a state religion. Furthermore, the clergy refused to take part in the celebrations in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of the Belgian independence. A discussion followed, that resulted in the decision not to attend the Te Deum as a body. Each individual MP had the right to decide for himself. Carathéodory notes that, as usual, the King and Queen would be present, as well as the government and the diplomatic corps in uniform. (In attachment is a copied letter about the Te Deum from Prime Minister Frère-Orban.)
