Synopsis

Ouverture de l'Exposition nationale. - une annexe.

In his report, Etienne Carathéodory Effendi mentions the inauguration of the Belgian National Exposition by King Leopold II and Queen Marie-Henriette on June 16th, marking the start of the festivities in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of the Belgian independence. Also present were the Count and Countess of Flanders (Prince Philippe of Belgium – brother of Leopold II – and his wife Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen), the complete diplomatic corps, the royal dignitaries, and the civil and military authorities. Carathéodory calls the ceremony one of the most magnificent ones, and notes that the exposition promised to be very remarkable. (In attachment is a newspaper clipping, containing a summary of the ceremony and the discourses pronounced on this occasion. A specific part of the speech of Vanderstraeten, mayor of Brussels, was indicated.)
