Synopsis

Elections en Belgique.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi informs Abbedin Pacha about the Belgian elections of June 8th, that resulted in an extra seat for the liberals. This meant that the liberal government would remain in power until 1882. Carathéodory explains that half of the seats in both Chambers of the Belgian parliament were renewed every two years. The Catholics had a partial victory in Antwerp, maintaining their position in the House of Representatives, whereas the mayor of Antwerp himself lost his seat. For the liberals, the results of Antwerp were largely compensated by the general results, meaning that the liberal government would preside the festivities of the fiftieth anniversary of the Belgian independence.
