Impression produite par les fiançailles de la Princesse Stéphanie. - Confidentiel
Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports about the wedding announcement of the Belgian Princess Stéphanie, daughter of Leopold II, and Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary. The Austro-Hungarian and the British press testified to a sentiment of great relief. The Belgian liberal Frère-Orban government was even more pleased with the wedding that coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the Belgian independence, as it was under their government that the banns of marriage would be proclaimed. Carathéodory notes that the liberals would probably win the next elections (of June 11th), so they could consolidate their legislative acts. He remarks that presiding during the festivities of the country’s fiftieth anniversary would increase their prestige. A wedding date was not fixed yet, but the wedding would probably not take place before fall season. The ceremony would have to take place in Vienna.
