Synopsis

Discours du Roi à Tournai

About the Belgian political situation, Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports that the hatred between the Catholics and the liberals reached its highest point of violence, precisely on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of the monarchy. King Leopold II visited Tournai to attend the city’s celebrations, and gave a speech marked by pure patriotism and caution. Carathéodory notes that the speech deserved the enthusiasm it engendered. (In attachment is a newspaper clipping containing the toast of the mayor of Tournai, to which King Leopold II replied by his speech.)
