Synopsis

Clôture des travaux des Chambres

After a very long debating day, the Belgian parliament adjourned for the summer break. Before adjourning, the House of Representatives decided on a budget to spend on the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Belgian independence. Etienne Carathéodory Effendi attached importance to the suggestion of this decision by the Catholic MP Joseph Thonissen, because it could be seen as a reaction to the contestations of some bishops. (These contestations should be seen in the light of the issues concerning the revision of the law on education, abolishing interference of the clergy.) To conclude, Carathéodory notes that luckily, the enlightened men of the right did not follow the ultramontanists.
