Synopsis

Démission du prince de Ligne du Sénat. - 2 annexes

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports about the resignation of the Prince of Ligne (Eugène de Ligne) as the Belgian Senate’s Speaker and Senator. His decision was the result of comments from both Catholics and liberals after the vivid debates, concerning the revision of the law on education. In attachment are the prince’s resignation letters, marked by an emotional language. His resignation engendered a polemic between the Catholics and the liberals, discussing the motives of his decision. Carathéodory remarks that the Prince of Ligne himself referred to “an act of political loyalty” in his second letter. Carathéodory considers it to be a great loss for Belgian politics, as the Prince of Ligne was an eminent and committed politician.
