Synopsis

Confidentiel. Révision du loi de 1842

Loghadès Effendi reports about the upcoming Belgian parliamentary debates concerning the revision of the law from 1842 on education. These debates were initiated by the liberal Frère-Orban government, and engendered polemic between the Catholic and liberal press. The old law, that Loghadès Effendi called illogical, allowed for the interference of the clergy with state education. Loghadès Effendi explains the changes proposed by the liberal government, replacing compulsion by liberty, and separating state and religion. Yet, he acknowledges the practical advantage of the old law, especially for state schools in the countryside. This would be at the disadvantage of the liberals.
