Synopsis

Fête du Roi

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports that the celebration of the name day of King Leopold II (on November 15th) started as usual with a Te Deum. This was followed by a big diplomatic dinner and a reception at Frère-Orban’s, the new Belgian Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs. The entire diplomatic corps attended the celebrations in their uniforms. Conform to the custom rules, the nuncio proposed a toast to the King, and immediately thereafter, Frère-Orban proposed a toast to the leaders of Belgium’s befriended and allied countries. Carathéodory saw fit to convey the Sultan’s and his government’s felicitations and wishes for the prosperity of King Leopold II.
