Synopsis

Diran Bey writes about a bill – on the fortification of Antwerp in case of invasion – that was discussed in the Belgian parliament. He refers to that specific bill, because the final decision may cause a shift in power balance between the two political parties: the Catholics (the right) and the liberals (the left). Diran Bey states that the Catholics try to overthrow the liberal government, since the latter had expressed the wish to resign if the bill would not be voted. After summarizing the three main arguments of the Catholics against the bill, Diran Bey concludes that it will be difficult for the government to face these attacks. By attributing positive features (such as dedication and patriotism) to the liberals, Diran Bey shows his support for them and for their respectable decision to either go down with their ideas or to triumph.
