Synopsis

Fête Royale. 1 annexe.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports about the celebration of the name day of King Leopold II of Belgium on November 15th. He describes the festivities that took place, starting with the Te Deum, attended by the royal family and the diplomatic corps. Thereafter, the diplomatic corps appeared in front of the King. That evening, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Count d’Aspremont-Lynden held an official banquet at the ministry for 36 people: all mission heads, the members of the government, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the civil and military heads. The nuncio proposed a toast to the King. Count d’Aspremont-Lynden added a toast to the leaders of Belgium’s befriended and allied countries. (In attachment is an excerpt from the Belgian Official Journal, the Moniteur Belge, in which the details of the ceremony were described.) The dinner was followed by an official reception, which gave Carathéodory the opportunity to pass on the Sultan’s congratulations to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Count d’Aspremont-Lynden thanked him and promised to pass them on to the King as soon as possible. After his return to the legation, Carathéodory made a copy of the Sultan’s message to give to Count d’Aspremont-Lynden. He was certain that the Sultan’s gesture would kindle the King’s admiration for the Sultan, as well as his sympathy for and sincere devotion to the Ottoman Empire.
