Synopsis

Lettre du Roi des Belges au Khédive

Leopold II of Belgium wished to explore Africa. He could count on support from Europe, but attached more importance to Egypt’s approval and cooperation. According to Etienne Carathéodory Effendi the King’s letter to the Khedive of Egypt, Ismaïl Pacha, should be seen in this light. In this letter, Leopold II courteously but firmly recommended the Khedive to solve his disputes with his creditors. Only then, Europe’s sympathy for Egypt would remain intact. This way, the King tried to help the Belgian holders of Egyptian funds.
