Synopsis

Séjour à Bruxelles de l'Archiduc Albert d'Autriche

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports that Archduke Albert of Austria, cousin of the Belgian Queen Marie-Henriette, stayed in Brussels for three days to visit the royal family. The diplomatic corps was invited to a big gala dinner at the royal palace in honour of Albert of Austria. King Leopold II himself presented Archduke Albert to the heads of the missions. Both engaged several times in a friendly conversation with Carathéodory, who remarks in his report that the King very tactfully avoided to address the asperity of Carathéodory’s position. The dinner went smoothly and the King seemed to acknowledge the rights intrinsic to Carathéodory’s diplomatic position and seniority. Even the positions of the less senior ministers plenipotentiary of Spain, Germany and Italy were acknowledged with courtesy. Carathéodory stresses the politeness and courtesy with which the Belgian royal family received the Ottoman legation. Prime Minister Malou attended Carathéodory’s wife to the table.
