Synopsis

Elections belges.

Etienne Carathéodory Effendi reports that the elections of June 13th, to renew half of the Belgian House of Representatives, turned out in favour of the Malou government. This way, the existing government could remain in power for at least two more years. The liberals were so sure of their victory, that the results of the elections led to tumultuous demonstrations in cities like Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels. Carathéodory notes that luckily, the authorities were able to prevent results that could have harmed Belgium’s reputation of political liberties and communal and administrative franchise. Carathéodory adds that all provocations came from the liberals, whereas the Malou government was moderate and did not seek to hinder the national liberties. He praised Malou for his calm reaction to the demonstrations, testifying to the stability of Belgium’s liberal institutions.
