Synopsis

Session Législative extraordinaire. Discours du Roi.

Glavany reports about the speech from the throne, pronounced by King Leopold II at the beginning of the extraordinary session of 1870, at the start of the new parliamentary year in Belgium. The King’s speech came up to the general expectations, as the King did not refer at all to the internal political affairs. After being welcomed enthusiastically into the parliament, the King expressed his hope that ‘the plague of war’ would not harm Belgium. He then mentioned the formal guarantees, given by the French Emperor, the Prussian King and the British government. Glavany reports about the enthusiasm of the crowd, cheering the King as he was making his way to the parliament. The extraordinary session following the King’s speech was expected to be short and without annoying discussions. The opposition did not wish to create difficulties.
