Public transport

In the province and the city of Antwerp transport is organised by the public transport company De Lijn.

Antwerp has a dense public transportation network. Buses and trams are available to take you to many different parts of the city. The following rates apply when you take a tram or bus: - A single ticket within the city, bought on the tram or bus will cost you 3 euro. - It allows you to use public transportation (buses and trams) for one hour.
- If you buy the ticket in advance, it will cost you only 1,80 euro. - A Lijn card is a pass with 10 journeys and costs 14 euro (trip price: 1,40 euro) - A day pass costs 5 euro; a three day pass 10 euro; a five day pass 15 euro (all in presale). If you buy theses passes on a bus or a tram, the price goes up to 7 euroo; 12 euro; 18 euro.

For more information about trams, buses, and rates, see De Lijn Website.

By bike

Cycling and walking are amongst the most popular ways of getting around in Antwerp.

Antwerp is a bike-friendly city. The distances are not too large, the bike lanes are flat and with the right gear, you can cycle all year round.

Velo is Antwerp's metropolitan bike system: you can pick up and drop off bicycles at various points whenever you like. The small bicycles have three speeds, anti-skid pedals and thick tires, so it’s easier to avoid the tram tracks. In order to ride Velo you have to register beforehand on the Velo website. There you can buy a week or a day pass. Users of a day or week pass receive a user code and password. With these codes you can immediately take a bike at any available station. The maximum time limit per trip is four hours.

Fietshaven is located under Antwerp Central Station. Renting rates start from 13 euro (1 day) to 42 euro (7 days). In order to rent a bike, you need to leave a valid passport as guarantee.

Taxis

In general, taxis are quite expensive. You have to pay a standard rate which is 2.48 euros between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and 4.34 euros between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m + a specific amount (1.04 euros) for each kilometre travelled. You can find taxis at various locations around Antwerp (the Central Station, Rooseveltplaats, Groenplaats,...).

Car

In Belgium, traffic moves on the right-hand side of the road. Unless otherwise indicated, the speed limit is 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on other roads and 50 km/h in built-up areas. Around schools and in some residential areas, there is a speed limit of 30 km/h. Drinking and driving is a serious offence in Belgium. In order to drive a car in Belgium, you must have a Belgian driving licence or a licence recognized by the Belgian law. The minimum age to drive a car is 18, and for renting a car it is 21. Insurance including unlimited third party liability, is obligatory. Finding parking space in Antwerp can be difficult and expensive.
